My publisher allowed me to work with my own designer and typesetter to create the art for two of my books. Once the books were underway, I had to make repeated attempts to collect the typesetter's fees. It wasn't maliciousness on their part; they were simply disorganized. This was a finesse collection. I wanted the payment on behalf of my friends, but I did not want to damage my relationship with the publisher. They're still sending me royalty checks 19 years later.

Dear Nick,
Please give your attention to the invoices of the Graphic Group, the typesetters who produced both [book #1] and [book #2].
I believe they sent the invoices 60 days ago, and the balance is something in the $11,000 range. This is becoming a serious problem for them; they're a small company, and the money is earmarked for payroll and federal taxes. They're really very concerned.
I understand you talked to Cindy Stout and had to seek further information, probably from Christine, who is on vacation.
It would be a great favor to me, and to Michael and Cindy Stout, if you could get them paid in the next few days. If you need further information, you can talk to them directly at 720-555-1212, or you're always welcome to call me any time, Nick, at 1 800-723-9675.
Thanks ever so much,
William S. Frank
P.S. The new [book #1] landed on my desk this week. Beautiful: I'm selling the heck out of it.
