Devan Mayson was the business editor of "The Rocky Mountain News," the 20th largest paper in the U.S. at the time. He ran a guest column called "The Business Rostrum," and I asked to be featured. Devan gave me the opportunity, liked my writing, and I published a dozen career strategy articles for him.
After Devan left the publication, I pitched another business writer, Martin Valery. Never approach a writer or editor cold. Read some of their latest stuff, and compliment them on it (appeal to ego). Explain your relevance to their readers and suggest a story idea or two. Based on this letter, Martin featured me prominently several times.

Dear Martin,
Merry Christmas!
You may remember me from Devan Mayson's tenure at "The Rocky Mountain News." I'm a Colorado career consultant and author, and I wrote a monthly column for Devan.
I've always enjoyed your writing, and I especially appreciate "She wrote the book on changing careers," which appeared November 18.
Although Colorado is coming out of a recession, the market is still full of job-changers. Today, job-hunting is becoming a lifestyle.
In the past twelve years, I've provided outplacement to more than 50 major U.S. corporations. I've helped several thousand people get back to work. At any given time of the year, I'm in the midst of about 30 job-searches.
I'm sending you my new book, "200 Letters For Job Hunters." Perhaps there is a story idea here. ("He wrote the book on getting in the door?")
Martin, if I haven't heard from you in about ten days, I'll give you a call to get your reactions.
Warmest regards,
William S. Frank
