The key to a good thank you note is to personalize it. Rather than saying, "Thank you for lunch, I hope we can do some business together," tie your thoughts to the lunch conversation.
In this case, we were getting to know a financial planner as a source of referrals. As a favor, we had given him the Birkman assessment, "the blood test, X-Ray, CT scan, and MRI for careers." He had told us how a Lexis dealership retained customers by storing their tires onsite. Can you imagine never again having to handle dirty tires? That would build loyalty.

Subject: Thanks for Lunch
Haylie,
Thanks so much for lunch Thursday. David and I really enjoyed our time with you.
You approach business and life with wit, wisdom, and a sense of humor—and we like that.
The "Lexus" customer service story was not lost on us. We have begun storing our clients' tires.
David says you took an in-depth interest in your Birkman feedback, more than the average candidate, and I'm confident we can put the results to good business use.
Thanks again for lunch, Haylie. It's great getting to know you,
:Bill
