Apology for Unintentional Slight

During a "feast cycle" in my consulting practice, a former client called me for advice and ideas during his job search. Not just any client, but someone who had been an anchor client in my practice: a HUGE client.

In the midst of the battle, I said I wouldn't be able to help him at the moment. That was a big mistake. I believe his feelings were hurt, with good reason, and it ruined our future relationship. This was one attempt to mend fences. Even if the relationship doesn't rebound, as it didn't in this case, apologizing is still the right thing to do.

Dear Samuel,

I believe there may be some lingering bad feelings from the past, and, if so, I want to apologize. I'm truly sorry if I hurt your feelings in any way—I certainly never intended to. I'll call you next week to say hello. I'd like to get our friendship back on track.
