Cold Call to Leverage Momentum

Colorado Springs is 50 miles south of Denver, about an hour's drive, and when the economy was in a downturn, we established a satellite office there. Having worked for several companies in Colorado Springs, I sent this cold call letter to see if we could develop further business. Ideally, this kind of letter should be individually addressed, not sent generically. That was a mistake.

The letter still produced consulting leads because I enclosed a response form which gave readers a fast, easy way to reply. The form follows the letter. I've found it really improved results to pre-write the prospect's name and address on the response letter. It's discouraging to get a solid lead with no name on it.

Dear Human Resources Executive,

Merry Christmas! Happy New Year!

I'm writing to introduce myself . . . and my company. Since 1985 I've been an outplacement consultant to several Colorado Springs companies, including . . .

  • Ampex
  • Atme1 (and Honeywell)
  • Central Bank
  • TRW, and
  • United Technologies.
Our business has grown through word of mouth and referrals. We've never advertised or even announced our presence, so there's a good chance you haven't heard of us.

Our Colorado Springs office is at 2436 Bijou Street, Suite 1100. Telephone: 719-555-0000.

Please keep us in mind if you or your friends in other companies have outplacement projects on the horizon.

Thanks so much.

Sincerely,

William S. Frank

P.S.—I hope this is your best year ever!
