Dear Janet,

On August 8, I will start working as a research associate in the laboratory of Dr. Edward Bell. He is Chairman of the Department of Microbiology at the University of Missouri Medical School. His research interest is Herpes Simplex Virus, primarily Type 1 which causes fever blisters. Thirteen years ago, I was a postdoctoral fellow in that department and that probably helped. Also, the fact that I have a Ph.D. made me hireable as a research associate, a position outside the State Civil Service system.

Dr. Bell is a consultant for American Genetics International, whose president I interviewed in May. That interview was arranged by an employment agent who had called Forty Plus of Missouri. One of the members had given the agent my name and a summary of my background.

So, association with Forty Plus, a self-help group of unemployed executive, administrative and professional people, ultimately resulted in finding a job.

I am looking forward to the challenges of working and to learning about glycoprotein isolations, recombinant DNA techniques, and immunology as related to Herpes simplex.

Karen will be in the fifth grade in September. She and Todd are not really looking forward to the adjustments which will have to be made in our lives, but all of us will do just fine, eventually.

Thanks for your encouragement, advice and help during the past ten months while I was looking for a job.

Your employed friend,

Nancy M. Connors
